The Seven Sorrows Rosary is a Catholic devotion that meditates on the seven sorrowful events in the life of Jesus Christ. The Rosary of the Seven Sorrows dates back to the 14th century. Mary, Our Lady of Sorrows, appeared to St. Bridget of Sweden and revealed this Rosary devotion to her.
Catholics pray the Seven Sorrows Rosary to learn to suffer with love, as Mary did. As we pray with Mary through her seven sorrows, we begin to feel empathy for her suffering, the suffering of her son Jesus, our neighbors, and our own. It is common to pray this Rosary on September 15th, the Feast Day of Our Lady of Sorrows.
This Rosary is traditionally prayed with a seven-decade Rosary.
As Catholics, we pray to Mary for her intercession on our behalf because of her unique relationship with Jesus Christ as his mother. Mary is also our mother. Jesus extended her motherhood to all humanity when He was on the Cross (John 19:26-27). Mary loves her children and prays for them, and will ultimately lead us to her son, Jesus.
